Change in Schedule
This past Friday, the Hackett Family of Tuscola, IL was struck with the devastating loss of their equipment shed and shop due to a fire. Thank goodness – no one was hurt and no cattle or pets were harmed. Please keep this family in your thoughts as they deal with this difficult situation and prepare to work through this as harvest comes closer.

The Hackett Family – Plainview Farms – was to be the first stop on the Illinois Hereford Tour this coming weekend (Saturday, September 4). Given the circumstances, we are going to plan on starting the tour and the 2nd planned stop – Ellis Farms at 12:00 pm (noon). We will start the tour by having lunch at Ellis Farms and viewing their operation.

At this point, the rest of the Hereford Tour remains unchanged. On a positive note, we have received over 100 RSVPs for the dinner on Saturday night at Albin Farms. We should have an outstanding crowd for this state-wide Hereford Event.

Please – be sure to pass along the news about Hackett’s fire as well as the change in starting points for the tour to all your Hereford friends and acquaintances.

Tour Schedule

Noon – 1 p.m.	Lunch at Ellis Farms

1 – 2 p.m.	Ellis Farms: 26455 N. 2300th St., Chrisman, IL 61924 • (765) 665-3207 Ellis Farms is in its 62nd year of producing seedstock cattle near Chrisman, Illinois and now includes the 6th generation of family members in the registered Hereford business. Today, the program is a conception to plate measured and evaluated cattle enterprise covering two purebred breeds, Hereford and Angus. EFBeef is a premier Hereford provider of seedstock for commercial cattlemen that get paid by the pound in value added programs. The EFBeef program has a sharp focus rooted in the basics of cattle production; fertility, calving ease, early growth, end product value and sustainable maternal components of cow size and milk flow. The cattle enterprise has brought numerous awards, most recently the 2002 and 2005 Beef Improvement Federation (BIF) Seedstock Producer of the Year finalist, Illinois Hereford Breeder of the Year awards in 1973 and 1993 and Phil & Joyce were awarded the Illinois Hall of Fame Award in 2001. We also bred/showed the National Champion Polled Hereford bull in 1974, Reserved Grand bull in 1979, Reserve Grand Female in 1973 and Supreme Champion Female in 1994. We are proud to have been a host for multiple Illinois tours including the first Hereford tour in 1965 that also included a bi-state field day with Indiana breeders and a crowd of over 700. Welcome to Ellis Farms.

2:10 – 3:15 p.m.	Lorenzen Farms: 17696 E. 1825 Rd., Chrisman, IL 61924 • (217) 269-2803 Lorenzen Farms started as a 105 acre farm located in Chrisman, Illinois, in Edgar County. John Lorenzen, Sr.purchased the farm and moved his family to this location from Foosland, Illinois in 1930. Vegetable crops and livestock became the farm income. Registered Polled Herefords came onto the scene in 1948. Woodlands and grasslands that is not suitable for farming are used to accommodate the Lorenzen Farm cow herd. The cow herd consists of registered Herefords, registered Angus, and commercial cows. The cows are wintered on silage and round bales with mineral and liquid supplement added. One feedlot houses the homegrown cull heifers and replacement heifers. The second feedlot houses the bred heifers, bulls, and the heifer calves selected for replacements. The third feed floor winters one third of the cow herd. We try to maintain high quality herd sires because of limited use of AI. Embryo transplants is used to improve the breeding herd. Registered cattle are marketed through production and private sales and the remainder are marketed through local stockyards and local cattle feeders. The registered cattle are production tested and the entire herd is strictly culled. Normally, 10% of the cow herd is sold for slaughter annually. Over the years our cattle have went from being successful in the showring to being productive in the pasture.

3:25 – 4:30 p.m.	Winans Herefords: 11879 E. 1800th Rd., Chrisman, IL 61924 • (217) 822-2935 Winans Herefords began as an extension of my 4-H & FFA cattle projects. I began showing in 1985 and after completing my 4-H years, I had developed a passion for the business that made me want to continue raising Hereford cattle. In 1995, Jim and LeAnn Roll of Hickory Grove Farms offered me an opportunity to purchase 10 fall heifer calves and one bred cow, thus beginning the current purebred operation. With the help and support of my wife Holly, my kids Gabe and Lily, and my parents Dan and Wanda, we currently run 18-20 spring calving cows. The cows are calved at the home farm and are artificially inseminated one time then turned out to pasture with our herd sire BH 100K Moe 94W ET (Moler X 100K from Benedict Herefords). Our cow herd has been heavily influenced over the years by the sires and cow families of Lorenzen Farms and Benedict Herefords. Our 2010 calf crop sires includes H Ignite 6068, WPH BH Maxim 702T (GQ X 100K), KAGS Scholarship S44 ET, BR Channing, and P606. We would like to thank the IPHA for asking us to be a part of the 2010 Herford tour and we are looking forward to welcoming everyone to the farm on September 4th.

4:40 – 6 p.m.	Albin Farms: 780 N. CR 2460 E., Newman, IL 61942 • (217) 492-2487 Albin Farms has been located in the Newman area since 1840. It has had various grain and livestock opertions durung this time. Today it consists of over 5000 acres of corn and soybean production plus over 50 head of purebred hereford cows. My wife, Julie, is a homemaker and serves as a director on our bank boards. My son Andrew is involved in the livestock and grain farm. He will be attending Southern Illinois University this fall. My father John, brother Perry are involved in the grain farm, while my mother Marge is involved with the banks. A high percentage of our cows have either C S Boomer 29F, Online 122L, or both in their pedigree. Most of our donor cows and sires along with other information is listed on our website at albinfarms.net. We look forward to seeing you on the tour and check us out at albinfarms.net and have your questions ready on

9 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.	Breakfast at Adcock Show Cattle

9:15 – 10 a.m.	Adcock Show Cattle: 2347 E. 1300 North Rd., Assumption, IL 62510 • 217-226-3239 The Adcock Family is fairly new to the Hereford business. While both Jan and Jim grew up exhibiting cattle at a national level, their venture into purebred Herefords didn’t begin until 2000 when our oldest daughter, Tamar, began her show career. It didn’t take long for the Hereford cattle to permanently establish their place. Just 10 years later our herd includes the 2008 IL State Fair Supreme Champion Female and JNHE Reserve Grand Polled Heifer and the 2008 IL State Fair Supreme Champion Cow. We also bred the 2009 Champion Land of Lincoln Steer shown by the Branyan Family. Tamar was just elected to the NJHA board of directors at the 2010 JNHE. Herefords have definitely become our family’s passion as all four children Tamar (18), Taryn (16) and twins Dean and Del (13) are active in the family operation and hold offices in the IJHA. Our focus is on raising show quality animals but also believe those show heifers need to be productive cows when their career in the ring is over. Located in the heart of prime corn and soybean country, pasture can be hard to come by. So the herd is kept at around 20 head and is built around the kids’ show heifers. We use embryo transfer and AI extensively. The primary donors are the 2008 IL State Fair Supreme Cow, ROF BH Vixen 226S ET and the 2008 IL State Fair Supreme Champion Heifer, BH L7 Connor 723. Both these cows will be on display as well as ET calves out of these two donor females by Downtown, Hallmark, Centennial and 146. We look forward to welcoming you for homemade cinnamon rolls and coffee Sunday morning.

10:30 – 11:30 a.m.	Stephens Hereford Farms: 1777 North 1000 East Rd., Taylorville, IL 62568 • (217) 825-7913 Stephens Hereford Farm is a 5-generation family farm, which began in 1914 when our great, great grandparents, Bert and Sarah Neal, moved from Kentucky to Sharpsburg, Ill., farming the Hayland’s farm. In 1943, Claire Faye Neal married Howard L. Stephens, who was in the Army until 1946. A short time later, Howard and Faye took over the Hayland’s farm, later purchasing it and making it Stephens Farm. The farm today is operated by Danny, Mark and Mike Stephens as a livestock and grain farm. We purchased our first registered Hereford breeding stock in 1977. We are in the process of calving 50 registered Hereford cows and 50 commercial cows. Our cowherd consists of mainly L1 breeding from the Cooper and Holden breeding programs. Several females remain in the herd by RCH L1 Domino 0082, “The Rock.” Some bulls are also being used from Upstream Ranch, which include UPS Domino 5216, UPS Navarro and UPS Brutus. The Loehr family will also have cattle on display at our tour stop. Mr. Loehr has put together an outstanding set of cows from Churchill Cattle Company, Upstream Ranch, Holden Herefords, Cooper Herefords, Baker Herefords and many others. He also has an outstanding herd bull line-up which includes CL 1 Domino 637 and UPS Brutus. We look forward to seeing all our Hereford friends for lunch on Sunday, September 5.

11:30 – 12:30	Lunch at Stephens Hereford Farms

1 – 2 p.m.	Prairie Meadow Herefords: Mark’s House: 1364 West Glenarm Rd. Glenarm, Il 62536 • (217) 622-5770 Prairie Meadow Herefords was started in 1976 with two bred females purchased from Dale Wyatt in Newton, Illinois. We were originally horned breeders that started using some polled lines when the two associations merged. Our cowherd is made up of approximately 50 females of which 20 to 30 are embryo calves. We have partnerships with Lorenzen Farms of Illinois, Upstream Ranch of Nebraska, Snowshoe Cattle Company of Montana, and Edward Allen of Kansas on donor females. Herd bulls in use include UPS Odyssey 7128, Harvie Woodstock 116W, CRR 4037 Flash 742, Harvie Dan T-Bone 196T, and Bar H Achiever 22W. These are assisted by UPS Nitro and SR Script 1137. Cattle and embryos are sold year-round both privately and through the Ft. Worth, Native American in Oklahoma, and Illinois Beef Expo sales. Contact Greg Cannedy (217) 725-7095 or Mark Cannedy (217) 622-5770 for more info.
